UPI Transaction Disputes: How to Raise and Resolve Complaints
You paid ₹2,000 for an online order. Order never arrived. Merchant isn't responding. You need your money back. Understanding the dispute resolution process helps you recover money when transactions go wrong. UPI has structured escalation paths for different types of disputes.
Types of Disputes
Money deducted but transaction failed, auto-refund didn't happen
Paid but product/service not delivered
Someone used your UPI without permission
Sent money to wrong UPI ID by mistake
Charged wrong amount
Act quickly. Most disputes have time limits. Raise complaint within 30 days for best results.
Immediate Actions
Screenshot transaction, save UTR number, note date/time
Verify transaction status in app and bank statement
For merchant disputes, contact them first
If unauthorized transaction, block UPI immediately
Write down all relevant information while fresh
Raising Complaint in UPI App
Open UPI app, go to transaction history
Select disputed transaction
Tap "Report Issue" or "Raise Complaint"
Select issue type (wrong amount, not received, etc.)
Provide details and attach screenshots
Submit complaint, note complaint ID
24-48 hours for acknowledgment, 7-10 days for resolution
Escalation Levels
(0-7 days)
Raise complaint in app, wait for resolution
(7-15 days)
If app doesn't resolve, call bank with complaint ID and UTR
(15-30 days)
Email upi@npci.org.in with all details if bank doesn't help

Bank investigates, may take 30-90 days
Wrong Recipient Recovery
Request them to return money
Ask bank to contact recipient's bank
If recipient refuses, send legal notice
For large amounts, file complaint
